Fight Inflammation With Food

Inflammation is your body’s normal response to harmful stimuli, such as an injury or pathogen. The purpose of it is to remove the harmful stimulus if possible and start the healing process. Without inflammation, healing would not be possible. That being said, excessive or chronic inflammation can be a major source of pain and discomfort (just ask anyone with arthritis or allergies!). Over time, it can lead to serious problems like heart disease and cancer. By quitting smoking, reducing stress, and reducing or eliminating these foods from your diet, you can significantly minimize the amount of inflammation in your body:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Sugar and white flour
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Hydrogenated oils (trans fats)
  • Factory-farmed meat/chicken
  • Dairy
  • Food additives
  • Nightshade plants (white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, tobacco)
  • Any food that you are allergic or sensitive to

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables (other than nightshades), whole grains, and lean meats from free-range animals will help reduce your body’s overall inflammation. Some foods are especially helpful in reducing inflammation and pain:

  • Tart cherries or tart cherry juice
  • Fresh pineapple or papaya (not canned)
  • Wild Alaskan Salmon
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Turmeric and ginger
  • Shiitake mushrooms
  • Green tea
