What is peripheral neuropathy?

If you are experiencing chronic numbness, tingling, pins-and-needles, or burning sensations in both feet or both hands, you may be suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Most commonly, neuropathy is caused by diabetes, chemotherapy, alcoholism, certain drugs, and age, which damage the tiny blood vessels and nerves in your extremities. Neuropathy may start out as just an annoying problem, but it is a progressive disorder and can lead to serious disability, increased risk of falling, and even amputation of limbs.

How is it treated?

Typically neuropathy is treated with drugs like Gabapentin or Lyrica, which are not always effective and come with unwanted side-effects such as: sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, memory problems, headaches, swelling, dry mouth, and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes opiates are also used, but they also have side-effects and a high risk of addiction.

Is there another option?

Yes! Recent studies have shown that laser therapy (photobiomodulation) is 90% effective at treating neuropathy symptoms. Dr. King is one of the few doctors in New England with a Summus Horizon Laser, one of the most powerful therapeutic lasers on the market. Instead of masking the symptoms, laser gets to the root of the problem- poor blood circulation. The 4 specific wavelengths of red and infrared light of the Summus Horizon Laser promote increased blood flow, oxygenation, and energy (ATP) production in the treatment area. Over time, new capillaries actually start to grow and the tiny nerves in the hands/feet start to heal. Pain and tingling is reduced and sensation gradually returns to the area.

What can I expect?

First, Dr. King will do a history and exam to make sure you are a good candidate for laser therapy and check the extent of your neuropathy. The neuropathy treatment protocol consists of 16 treatments (2-3x per week), each one lasting about 30 minutes. Laser is performed over the neck and arms/hands if your neuropathy is in the hands; it is performed over the lower spine and legs/feet if your neuropathy is in the feet. The treatment is completely painless. You will only feel a mild warming sensation. There are no side-effects other than some soreness, which is very rare. Most people start to feel a difference after 3-4 treatments. Dr. King performs a re-evaluation after your 8th and 16th treatment to check progress. Most people will see a 80-100% reduction in symptoms after 16 treatments.
